4th position overall in the Complete University Guide 2010/11, compiled in association with The Independent. In individual subject rankings, many departments appeared in the top 5 in the country, including Archaeology, Chemistry, Classics and Ancient History, English, General Engineering, German, History, Iberian Languages, Medicine, Middle Eastern and African studies, Physics and Astronomy, Philosophy, Russian and East European languages, Sociology, Sports Science, and Theology and Religious Studies.
6th position overall in the Times Good University Guide 2010/11. In individual subject rankings, the following subjects were listed in the top five in the country: Archaeology, Chemistry, Classics & Ancient History, Education, English, French, General Engineering, Geography, German, History, Iberian Languages, Italian, Middle Eastern and African Studies, Physics & Astronomy, Russian, Sports Science, Theology & Religious Studies.
2nd position in the Best University Halls category at the 2009 National Student Housing Survey (NSHS) awards, with the City of Durham being awarded the 2009 Best Student Living Experience. The NSHS is an annual survey of students in higher education across the UK. The survey measures satisfaction levels in all types of accommodation.
Awarded the Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers award by the Times Higher Education magazine in 2009, highlighting the success of the University's research-skills training programme which aims to create an integrated community of postgraduate doctoral researchers in all academic disciplines.
7th position overall in the Sunday Times University Guide 2009/10. Durham was commended for its sports activities with The Sunday Times saying: 'In any given year, the university helps about 20 international-class athletes across a variety of sports. About 90% of students play sport regularly. Facilities are outstanding.'
