Putting a gift in your will
Legacies really are essential to Durham’s advancement and they place committed alumni at the forefront of our development as a modern University. We understand, though, that our supporters often have an affinity with particular elements of the University and wish to recognise that through a gift in their will.
There are priority areas for which we are actively seeking long-term support, though these are not limiting and of course supporters are at liberty to tailor the focus of their gift to appropriately reflect, for example, their fondness for their College and passion for their subject area.
The priority areas are
- College-based undergraduate, masters or PhD scholarships
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
- Endowed Professorial Chairs
- College, research, teaching or sport facilities
- Naming opportunities for rooms and other facilities in existing buildings
- Libraries (University Library or Palace Green Library)
Unrestricted gifts are also most welcome as the flexibility they afford enables the University to use the gift where it is of most value. This could be an area of need which, unless you update your will very regularly, might not have been conceived when you considered your options and decided to make provision for a gift to Durham. The legacy gift with the deepest impact is broadly designated or free of restrictions.
We would always encourage you to contact us and share your wishes with us to ensure you are appropriately thanked and the University understands your gift. Please contact Louise McLaren at email@example.com, on 0191 334 6313 or at Development and Alumni Relations Office, Palatine Centre, Stockton Road, Durham, DH1 3LE.
We cannot give advice on what to put in your will – for that we strongly recommend you contact a lawyer who will be able to explain whether there are any tax benefits of donating that might be relevant to you. Please note that Durham University has an Exempt Charity Registration Number, X6507, which your lawyer should also be made aware of when considering a donation or gift. The University has also moved to new premises and its registered address, is Durham University, Palatine Centre, Stockton Road, Durham, DH1 3LE. When considering a gift, we suggest for clarity purposes that where your gift is to one of the University’s colleges the name of the college is set out as follows: “[name] College of Durham University”. If your gift is to either St Chad’s and St John’s they should not be set out in conjunction with Durham University as they are separate legal entities to the University.
Thank you for considering a gift to Durham University in your will.
