Ways to get involved

There are many ways for you to get involved with the University in the years after you leave, depending on the time you have available and your interests. Becoming an alumni volunteer can be rewarding and stimulating. It can be an excellent way to re-engage with Durham, catch-up with old friends and network with fellow graduates - professionally and socially!

Regional Alumni Reps

UK and International

We aim to create a dynamic, engaged and thriving alumni community and Regional Reps are at the heart of this. Our Regional Reps hold at least one alumni event in their area per year, encouraging local alumni to come along, network, reminisce and catch up on all things Durham. Along with these events, our Regional Reps are happy to speak with alumni visiting or moving to their region and are always welcoming to new alumni in their area.

International Student Recruitment

International

The International Office will be travelling to many different countries over the next few months to talk to as many students as possible who are hoping to come to Durham University. As well as attending major education fairs, we will be working with schools and colleges worldwide to deliver talks and presentations to help students in the decision making process. The International Office will also be holding various alumni receptions and welcomes alumni input on recruitment trips.
We expect to be visiting Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, and the USA. More information on our visits can be found on the International Office website.
If you would like to get involved or for more information on how alumni can help with student recruitment, please contact v.h.anderson@durham.ac.uk.

Hospitality Volunteer

UK and International

We are always looking for venues which we can utilise for alumni gatherings. If you have access to a unique and interesting venue, or can offer free venue space in a major city, we would be delighted to work with you.
We are also looking to create unique ‘Access’ events, offering students and alumni an one-off opportunity to see behind the scenes of interesting companies or attractions. These could be tours of major businesses, museums, art galleries, studios etc.
By helping to host these events, you will gain publicity for the venue or service you are providing, and will have the opportunity to network and  catch up with fellow Durham alumni. If this is something that you would be able to offer, please contact us at alumni.volunteer@durham.ac.uk.

Career Networks

UK and International

Most of the colleges have career network schemes, designed to help students find alumni contacts who will provide support and advice to prepare students when embarking on their chosen career path.

See if your college has a career network scheme. If your college doesn’t have a scheme, please contact the Alumni Relations Office to see what other opportunities may be available.

Durham's Careers & Enterprise Centre offers free vacancy advertising for internships, placements, graduate schemes and other roles. Full details can be found here, or contact vacancy.advertising@durham.ac.uk.

Guest Speaker

UK and International

Alumni often come back to campus to deliver a guest lecture to current students, or to talk about their careers. Career talks offer students a unique insight into the industry in which they are interested, and the opportunity to learn more about the skills they need to develop in order to work in the industry.
We also organise a programme of Professional Networking events every year which are targeted at alumni in specific industries and sectors. These events usually feature industry experts giving talks on their personal journey or taking part in panel discussions on a pertinent subject.
If you feel that you would like to be involved in speaking either to students or fellow alumni, please email alumni.volunteer@durham.ac.uk.
