Statement from the Alumni and Development Officer

This year has seen some substantial changes to the way we engage with our alumni body: as part of this Trevs is leading the way in modernising our alumni engagement and integrating our alumni into the heart of the College. At a meeting of College Council on 8 June 2017 our alumni body, the Trevelyan Society, was formally dissolved, after having been largely dormant for a period of some years. The Trevelyan Society has been replaced by the Trevelyan Alumni Committee (TAC), a sub-committee of College Council, which will proactively represent the interests of alumni at the most senior level in College. Importantly, this committee will continue to work towards the aims of the Trevelyan Society, namely:

- to unite past students, staff and common room members of Trevelyan College (the alumni) with present members of College in promoting the academic, financial and general wellbeing of the College;

- to give alumni, staff, and common room members opportunities of meeting and keeping in touch with one another and with the College.

However, the TAC will pursue these objectives as a full and active part of the College, rather than as a separate organisation. All Trevelyan alumni continue to be valued members of the College, entitled to the same rich level of participation in College life as ever. Indeed, the foundation of the TAC as a fully integrated part of the College will mean that alumni are better able to participate in decision making within College than they have been before. We are the first and only Durham college to integrate the voices and interests of our alumni so fully into the College’s decision-making body, and we are confident that this will lead to a tangible improvement in the alumni experience offered by College.

One of the best ways to get involved with College life is to sit on the newly-formed TAC, and we are now registering expressions of interest. Sitting on the TAC will involve meeting once a term (in person or via Skype) with College staff and other members of the Committee to discuss and implement plans concerning alumni engagement, as well as issues affecting the interests of alumni. Members will also advise College Officers on the disbursement of funds nominated to the TAC, and represent Trevelyan alumni on such relevant University committees and discussion groups as will be convened from time to time.

By no means is this opportunity available only to alumni living in and around Durham. Indeed, we encourage expressions of interest from all alumni, regardless of where you are in the world. Nor do you need to have had any pervious experience of similar positions to sit on the committee: the TAC is a new and ambitious venture and we would love to have fresh perspectives around the table, informing the decisions that we make.

Getting on board is easy! To register your interest in joining the TAC, or for more information, simply contact the College’s Alumni and Development Officer, Thomas Barber via email, or on 0191 334 7016.

Minutes of the first Alumni Committee meeting will be available after the 27th January 2018.
