Join us in San Francisco for an evening networking event for alumni, friends, and supporters with a broad interest in start-ups and the tech sector.

This event will take place at the Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati's SOMA office in the heart of San Francisco, where our special guest speakers Esther Crawford (CEO of Squad) and Anna Gordon (Product Marketing Lead for Facebook Watch and former Executive VP at the BBC) will be joined by Durham North America Development Board Member, Jon Vlassopulos (Managing Partner, A-Force Ventures and CEO, Tribalist) to discuss tech, start-ups, and their career trajectory in the Valley.

Expert Panellists 


Jon Vlassopulos – BA Chinese, Korean & Management, Van Mildert, 1997

Jon Vlassopulos is the founder and CEO of Tribalist, an online platform to search, create, and share the best lists on the web. Tribalist is based in San Francisco and is backed by top Silicon Valley and Hollywood investors like WME and Cherubic Ventures, and by super angels from companies like Facebook, Bertelsmann, Red Bull and Apple.

Jon is also the Managing Partner of A-Force Ventures, an early stage venture capital fund that invests in consumer startups with a focus on female founders. He has invested in fantastic companies like Outdoorsy, The League, Hey Vina, Squad and Laurel & Wolf. Over his 22 year career, Jon has created successful industry firsts in the areas of mobile, games, advertising, TV and music. Prior to founding Tribalist, Jon was CEO of award winning, mobile entertainment studio skyrockit, managing US carrier content operations for companies like Sprint and building innovative branded entertainment products and experiences for Fortune 500 brands like Gap and Coca Cola.

Jon did his undergraduate degree at Durham University majoring in Chinese and Economics with a minor in Korean, and is also an active member of Durham’s North American Development Board.


Anna Gordon - BA 
Modern Languages, St Mary's, 2002

Anna moved to Silicon Valley just over a year ago to become Product Marketing Lead for Facebook's video platform, Facebook Watch. Prior to joining Facebook, Anna spent more than ten years working for the BBC in a variety of executive roles, leading strategy for the UK TV channels and BBC iPlayer, the launch of global over-the-top video services and sales strategy to bring BBC entertainment programs and formats to international audiences. Most recently she was the Executive Vice President for the BBC's commercial business in Latin America and US Hispanic with teams across Miami, Mexico City and Sao Paulo.

Anna graduated in Modern Languages from St. Mary's College, Durham in 2002. She is also a graduate of Stanford's Graduate School of Business having completed the Executive Program in 2017.

Esther Crawford


Esther Crawford, MA International Relations, Ustinov College, 2007

Esther is the co-founder and CEO of Squad, an app for screen sharing with friends. After finding early success on YouTube, she became a pioneer in influencer marketing and spearheaded award-winning digital campaigns for Fortune 500 companies including Weight Watchers and Kmart.

Esther graduated from Durham University with an MA in International Relations (Middle East) in 2007.
