Introducing the Association of Durham Alumni in Dorset

Durham alumni in Dorset are invited to find out more about ADAD, (the Association of Durham Alumni in Dorset). Although 400 miles from Durham, ADAD is dedicated to providing sixth-formers in the county the opportunity to find out about Durham University and to offer those who are interested an all-expenses-paid, two or three day visit to Durham in order to attend the University’s Open Days and find out more about Durham student life. The aim is to provide them with the opportunity to visit a university that they might otherwise have considered too far from home. As part of the visit, ADAD feels that it is important to allow the students from different schools the opportunity to form early friendships so that they are ready for the wide variety of students they will meet in Durham. ADAD also places importance on encouraging our students to aspire and be enthusiastic about the university they choose.

Working in conjunction with Durham University since 2012, ADAD has brought up to Durham almost 100 students from state and independent schools throughout Dorset. The ADAD committee comprises Durham graduates who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and careers and who have come together in a voluntary capacity to encourage and assist the best Dorset students to attend Durham University. Every alumnus or alumna in Dorset is welcome to join it at any time.  As ADAD says, “It’s voluntary, it’s fun, and extremely worthwhile”. If you would like to find out more, please contact Jill Lidgey the ADAD Liaison Officer jill.lidgey@gmail.com.

John Snow College

John Snow 1We started July, basking in the prideful glow of watching our finalists graduate. Although the week had a few showers, the rain did not deter our students from enjoying themselves and graduating in style. Along with various drink receptions and leavers photos, the week also included the college's very first Graduation Dinner. Held at the Radisson Blu hotel in Durham the evening was a huge success with speeches from past presidents, entertainment for the DSU Gospel choir and a few impromptu words from our outgoing president Kenya Peters.

SF Aidan'sHello Aidanites and congratulations to all of our recent graduates who are joining the global network of Aidan’s alumni. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome them to the Aidan's Alumni Association. We hope they will continue to be part of St Aidan's College through the Association.

Since our last communication Aidan's held their annual Summer Festival on 5 June and it was great to see so many recent graduates coming back for it. There was a range of excellent live music and a vast selection of real ales from both local breweries and those further afield that perfectly complemented the delicious hog roast that had been lovingly slow-cooked overnight. Recently-retired legendary Aidan's porter Les Goodyear was also in attendance and he kindly shared some of his memories with the alumni committee for an article that will appear in the next Alumni Association newsletter.
