It is not
often that a piece of music is given its first performance over eighty
years after it was started. Jonathan Clinch (University College, 2009-15)

as part of his PhD studies with Professor Jeremy Dibble. Now it’s receiving
its first performance as part of the Cheltenham Festival on Saturday 9 July

Dream Comes True
After 50 Years
In 1962 Dyana Rodriguez (St
Aidan's, Theology, 2012-16) was at school in Liverpool. Durham was her
first choice of university to read modern languages. She was predicted to
get 3 As at A level, and was thrilled when invited to visit St Hild's
College. In those days, you had to take an entrance exam and attend a
rigorous interview. Dyana did abysmally in her interview, so it didn't come
as a shock when a few weeks later she received a letter of rejection.
Of course, she was very disappointed,
because she had fallen in love with Durham. She ended up reading French at
Liverpool University. At the end of her first year decided that the French
course wasn't for her and switched to General Studies, focussing on
Sociology and Psychology. After graduating with a BA, she became a
journalist.
Fast forward to
2016, and on 1 July, Dyana will fulfil her dream, standing on the stage in
Durham Cathedral, shaking hands with the Chancellor, and graduating with an
MSc with her family watching. Champagne will be flowing.

Alumni Career Case
Studies
The
Durham University careers department is putting together a series of case
studies looking at the experiences of Durham alumni who have moved on into
employment. These case studies will help students to become aware of
the range of careers available and the steps they need to get into
them.
If you
would be happy to share your story, please complete this form and return it
to feedback.careers@durham.ac.uk. We would like
to hear from alumni with a wide range of career experiences and from a
variety of disciplines. The questions are open ended and you can
write as much or as little as you like, but the more detail you provide the
more helpful it will be to our students.
We are
hoping to put some of the case studies on the University blog. If you would like to be
featured, please include a photograph of yourself along with your completed
form.

summer balls, endless nights and of course graduation. The JCR have outdone
themselves this year by throwing a fantastic Arabian Nights Summer Ball, a
never-ending festival-themed Snow day, an unmissable holifest, and, for the
second year running, a very successful Day of Knowledge and Wisdom. Look
out for photos of all the above events in the next edition of the College
Newsletter.

University College
As we head towards the
end of June most people would expect things to be slowing down at the
Castle. In actual fact the College is a buzz of activity on all fronts.
Most students
finished their exams at the very beginning of June and have been enjoying
their new freedom from work.
As
I write this the courtyard is filled with vans and truck delivering the
props for June Ball. The Castle is positively pulsing with excitement as
the social event of the year draws near. I am sure you have your own
memories of June Ball but if you would like a reminder we will be posting
photos of the Ball on the alumni Facebook page.

Department of English
Studies
Stage dragons, medieval skeletons and troupes of actors will
be taking to the streets of Durham in July, as researchers from Records of
Early English Drama North East (based in English Studies) put on a public
festival celebrating the historical drama and performance history of the
region. Theatrum Mundi will be a unique opportunity to see
medieval and Renaissance performances, including the oldest work of drama
from Britain that was composed right here in the North East, and a
specially commissioned torch-lit show on Palace Green that highlights the
region’s dramatic heritage.
