A Message from our Director

Welcome to our jam-packed October 2020 edition of Newswire, containing all the latest news from around our global alumni community and here in Durham.

Over the summer, around 4000 of our alumni from over 70 countries have been hosting and taking part in our Live in Lockdown series and other online University events – taking advantage of lifelong learning and networking opportunities, engaging with thought and industry leaders, and enjoying some welcome light entertainment! Please see Newswire for updates on our programme through the remainder of 2020 and beyond.

Thank you to so many volunteers around the world who have been helping the University to orient and welcome our incoming Class of 2021; thank you also to those who have been doing everything you can to help our recent graduates – welcoming them into our alumni community and providing careers guidance and support in so many different ways. Your efforts make a remarkable difference. More news on this at our forthcoming Convocation and Dunelm Society Annual Dinner (online).

In this edition of Newswire, we would like to pay tribute to a great friend of our Development and Alumni Relations team and a celebrated alumnus of Durham University: Sir Harold Evans, who sadly passed away last week. Sir Harry was a lifelong supporter and advocate of Durham – regularly hosting or attending events and debates, carefully mentoring our student leaders, and always encouraging us to do more with our incredible network. The Vice-Chancellor leads our tributes in Sir Harry’s honour in complement to the public outpouring of gratitude for his life and work.

As we welcome our new and returning students, we look forward to another great year for Durham University and to engaging with all of you – wherever, whenever, and however we can to best serve our community – over the year ahead.

With sincerest regards

Andrew Harston
