Ustinov College Update - February 2020

In December, our programme of scholarly, cultural and social activities continues with a range of activities for our students, staff and local residents.

On 6 December, Ustinov College hosted the Neville’s Cross Christmas Festival at Sheraton Park, which was organised by the Neville’s Cross Community Association in collaboration with Global Citizenship Programme Scholars and Graduate Common Room volunteers. The event attracted hundreds of local community members, with a visit from Santa Claus and one of his reindeer, performances from local musical groups, and stalls from local craft groups. It was a great opportunity to welcome the local community into College and develop new relationships with our neighbours.

On Monday 9 December, we were delighted to welcome Professor David Olusoga OBE to present the keynote lecture ‘We need to talk about Windrush’ at Redhills: Durham Miners’ Hall to 300 attendees, comprised of members of staff, students and the local community. Professor Olusoga provided a fascinating insight into the Windrush Scandal of 2018, its context within Black British History and connections to the history of post-war British politics. The lecture was co-organised with the Durham University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit and Durham Miners’ Association.

We are looking forward to our Christmas Formal, which this year will be hosted at St Mary’s College on 16 December. The Formal will feature a performance from our College Choir, who will perform two songs during the course of the meal.

As we approach the end of 2019, we would like to wish all our alumni, supporters and friends a very Happy New Year from Ustinov College. We are always pleased to hear from our alumni, so please do get in touch using our dedicated email address.
