The Good University Guide is made up of a number of indicators including student satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider university experience, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend, and degree completion rates.

Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor at Durham University said: "To have achieved our highest ever position of 4th in this prominent league table is a tremendous success.

Distinctive student experience

"It once again demonstrates Durham’s strengths across education, research and student experience, achieved by the outstanding staff and students at Durham University. Together we create an environment where academic outputs push subject boundaries, our students are academically challenged throughout their studies, and they become fully immersed in the wide range of extra-curricular activities available. This enables our students to develop the knowledge and skills sought after by leading graduate recruiters from across the world.”

As well as the University’s overall improvement, the guide ranks Durham’s Music department as top in the UK. Professor Corbridge added: “This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the hard work and dedication shown by all of the staff and students within the Music department. As well as the first-rate educational environment, our music students also benefit from the rich and vibrant musical life the University offers, providing a truly distinctive student experience.”
