Durham Inspired: Live
The life and work of Sir Arnold Wolfendale

Thursday 1 September, 11-5pm (BST)

In Durham or online via Zoom

Sir Arnold Wolfendale, the fourteenth Astronomer Royal,  was one of the most significant scientific voices of the last 70 years, not only for his contributions in cosmic ray physics but in his leadership of various national and international scientific bodies.  Here at Durham he laid the foundations of a physics department which would develop world class research not only in cosmic rays, but in also in cosmology and astronomy.

His death in 2020 meant that it is only now that Durham Physics can celebrate his life and legacy.  On Thursday, 1st September, we will therefore be holding a day of public lectures to which you are warmly invited.  These lectures led by the present Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees will explore not only Sir Arnold’s scientific contributions but also the current status of the fields which he opened up.

You are very welcome to join us in person in Durham. Alternatively, we will be live streaming all lectures given and a link to watch these on the day will be shared in advance.

If you wish to attend, whether in person or online, please register in the bookings tab.
