What kind of people make up the Durham alumni community in your area? Are they expatriates or locals?

The alumni community in Atlanta is very small (less than 10) and very friendly. We are a mix of Americans who studied abroad and Brits who ended up living in the US. We range in age from our early 30s to late 60s. We meet once a year for Dunelm Days.

What inspired you to sign up as an alumni volunteer?

I am the alumni volunteer by default! This happened twice to me. Once, I was the only one who showed up to an event and the leader said she was moving, so, tag, I was it. Then we had a few years where someone new moved to Atlanta and actually volunteered. Alas, he has moved on, so I find myself in charge again. If you are moving to Atlanta, feel free to step up to be our fearless leader.

What are your fondest memories of Durham?

All my Durham memories are good memories. It was a happy year for me. The friends I made in Durham have proven to be life-long friends. We have stayed in close touch through the years, and now, with messaging apps, we are often in touch daily. You can't ask for more than that.
