Stubbs Scholarships in the Department of Physics

The Department of Physics was delighted to receive a transformational gift from Drs Rodney (Physics, Van Mildert, 1968-71) & Frances (Physics, St Mary’s, 1965-71) Stubbs to support PhD Scholarships in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Group.

Rodney and Frances met at Durham in the late 1960s, where they were married whilst they were both PhD students.

Fifty years later, the couple returned to the University to visit Professor Nigel Glover, Head of Physics, explaining that “having retired, and retaining our strong interest in Physics, we want to support Physics research at Durham.” Consequently, following discussions with Professor Nigel Glover, Rodney and Frances pledged their generous support to the Department through the creation of a new fund to support PhD students in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Group.

Physics at Durham continues to be globally renowned, with world-class research, strong industry links, and an exceptionally talented student community. The newly established Stubbs Scholarships will help the Department to continue to attract the very best and brightest minds to Durham, supporting two PhD scholarships within the Department to grow the critical mass of the Atomic and Molecular Group and to undertake innovative research within this exciting discipline.

Professor Nigel Glover, Head of Department, said,”It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet with Rodney and Frances, and I am delighted that they have chosen to support the Department in this way. External funding for PhD students continues to be a real challenge for universities, so this is a wonderful way to give back and to stay connected with the Department.”

The first of the Stubbs scholarships was recruited in 2019 with a second due to start in autumn 2021. Rodney and Frances remain in close contact with Professor Glover and colleagues within the Department.
