Appointment of First Visiting Professor of Pensions Law

Philip Bennett (Arts Combined, Hatfield College, 1972-75) who spent more than 30 years as a partner in Slaughter and May, a leading London law firm, specialising in pensions law and is now set to join our Law School.

Celebrating Four Great Female Philosophers

Four women philosophers thought that philosophy should be a central activity in human life and they are the focus of new research by Dr Clare Mac Cumhaill, presented at a major exhibition this summer.

The Dunelm Society Annual Dinner will take place at the Barber-Surgeons' Hall, London on Tuesday 19 November, preceded by Convocation.

Durham alumna Noha Aboueldahab won the Professional Achievement Award in 2018-19. Now is your chance to enter for this year's awards. The British Council has announced the 6th round of the awards, with applications and nominations opening on Wednesday 3 July.

Jane Marriott Announced as First Female British High Commissioner to Kenya

Jane Marriott OBE (History, University College, 1994-97) has been appointed British High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya. Taking up the appointment in the summer, Jane will be the first woman to hold this important diplomatic role.

Class Notes

Qatar's candidate, Durham alumna Dr Al-Misnad (PhD education, and Honorary Degree (Law), St Aidan's College, 1979-84), has been elected as a member of the UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Phillip A. Cooke (Music, Van Mildert College, 1998-01) has his book The Music of James Macmillan published by Boydell & Brewer.

Harry Rice (Geography, St Cuthbert’s Society, 2012-15) and his Durham alumni team founded mindfulness app LagomMind which aims to improve student and young professionals mental health. They got to the final of an entrepreneurship competition called The F Factor last week and pitched at Founders Forum in front of politicians, CEOs and royalty.

Robert Shepherd (Chemistry, Grey College, 1962-65) had his book Captain Gray's Houses, the history of an important group of early Georgian houses in Twickenham published by Durham's Sacristy Press.
