Durham Vocal Festival: World Premiere of The Life of St Cuthbert

This year will once again see Durham students taking part in the annual Durham Vocal Festival. A particular highlight for 2019 is the Life of St Cuthbert project; a week-long musical pilgrimage through Northumberland and County Durham featuring Durham University Chamber Choir.

The Life of St Cuthbert was commissioned by Cantata Dramatica following a project with the Durham University History Department. The resulting composition by Solfa Carlile is based on a script by Durham academics Nick Pitts-Tucker and Dr. Charlie Rozier, which traverses the extraordinary life of this Northumbrian saint. Special previews of the work will be brought to audiences in Bamburgh on Saturday 2 February, and to primary school children across 4 schools in Northumberland and County Durham on 5 and 6 February, where a specially-produced version of the work will allow pupils to join in and perform alongside musicians.

Months of hard work will all come to an end on Friday 8 February in Durham Cathedral, with a spectacular world premiere involving Durham University Chamber Choir and guest musicians, conducted by James Burton, Choral Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

This is a truly remarkable Durham event, combining academic research, student performances, outreach work and professional partnerships. One not to miss!
