St Cuthbert's Society

It has been far from our usual start to the academic year thanks to Covid -19 and the restrictions that have been placed on us. Thankfully Cuth’s Freshers were still welcomed in style with the addition of two handsome marquees on the lawn of House 12 enabling careful, Covid-secure meetings to take place and even mini matriculation ceremonies. The marquees are also being used as an overspill to the bar where numbers are severely limited and everything takes place in ‘households’. University life is challenging and changes day by day but Cuth’s remains a positive place!

After a successful Alumni catch up via Zoom in September, the online AGM of the Alumni Association has now been planned for Saturday 14 November at 1.30pm. Please look out for an email invitation following shortly. There are various openings on the committee so please do consider whether you would like to be part of this.

Professor Roy Boyne, Principal 2003-8, died on Thursday 22 October, after some years of ill health. He joined the University’s Dept of Sociology in 1996, where he did innovative work around risk, surveillance and culture, and was Vice Provost at the Stockton Camus before becoming Principal at Cuth’s. Among his many contributions were the building of Brooks House at Parson’s Field, the establishment of the annual Fellows’ Lecture, and most importantly the preservation of our historic name of ‘Society’. Roy and Nicola were enormously hospitable and encouraging to generations of students and alumni; Roy will be much missed, and affectionately remembered.
